ipod shuffle gone all weird!

Hi there
I was wondering if any of you lovely techie folk could help me.
I have an ipod shuffle (clip on type) and it is flashing for 10 seconds when I put it on charge.
In the instructions it says this means " Firmware damaged,Must restore software"
What does this mean & is it knackered??
Also when I plug it into pc via usb, itunes doesn't seem to recognise it. I have a nano as well and it recognises that tho so itunes is ok.
