Have a look here http://www.speedtest.net/ its not entirely accurate its better to look on your router if you have one.
  • I would personally suggest http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html. They seem to be very accurate and i find with the other one www.speedtest.net that the amount of flash on the page can make your computer respond slower, causing the test not to be very accurate!

Just make sure you dont use your ISP's speed test! I used BT's and apparently im getting 7mbps connection! Yeah Right! More like 2mbps..

And run the test on a wired PC - wireless can slow it down quite a bit.

O2 dongle (mobile broadband) doesn't need a BT line, but O2 Home does. My O2 mobile is around 1mbs, O2 home 6mbs on wired PC, 2-4mbs on WiFi (can vary depending how far you are from your local exchange).

Mobile is a bit under £15 a month for ups to 3GB with O2 home thrown in for just under a fiver (think this has just a 'fair useage' limit, but I only use a couple of gig).

I would definitely recommend O2. Have just done a speedtest on the thinkbroadband link (above), using wireless laptop - receiving speeds of 11.2 mb.

We only use O2 for broadband and as we top up O2 PAYG mobile at least every 3 months, monthly cost is just under £10, unlimited downloads.

    Good luck
