No access to private car park, what now?

Please would someone be able to help me with this situation, any ideas or advice welcome:

I run a small shop in the centre of our town. We have a private car park at the back of our building, for which we pay (in with our rent) to park in. Since the beginning of January, there have been road works present which have effectively made the centre of town pedestrianised.

Due to this, I have had to find parking elsewhere. Usually I park a 20min walk out of town in a residential (but always lots of spaces) area. It's a bit of a pain though, especially when it's raining.

Today, I was told by one of the workmen that I am not likely to have vehicular access to my private parking until EASTER  !!!

In your opinion, should the local council give some kind of concession (like something you could display on your dashboard to give free/reduced parking in the council car parks) to those who currently cannot access the land on which they pay to park?

I'm just sooooo annoyed, having gotten nowhere today by phoning all the relevant parties (who have been passing the buck). Am I being unreasonable/greedy?

I think you should put your request in writing to the council. It is well justified. Ensure you explain your circumstance and the inconvenience you are facing. If you can get other businesses to join (if they are also affected) the better for you.
    goodluck
  • Thanks naijapower, I will try to persuade the others that have been affected by this to help me get something done about it. Trouble is, they don't seem bothered - quite happy to pay out £4 a day to park (?). Well, I'm now a MSE-convert so I'm not giving up without a fight! :money:
  • LOL, good for you. Usually there is compensation when works cause an inconvenience.

Scan and upload it as per the welcome sticky on the main board, someone will take a look for you :)
  • Crabman, thanks, but I have to hold my hands up on this one. I thought the bottom of the hill was restricted parking, but the top wasn't (where I parked). I haven't been back to check the signs, just paid my fine this morning. This has certainly taught me to be more careful to look for signs in future.

Are you certain that the ticket was absolutely correct? They have to contain very precise wording, you know. And the signs and road markings must be right, too.

I did make sure that everything on the ticket was right and if I'd been in as defiant a mood as I was yesterday I may have tried to contest it (thou not sure on what grounds). As it is, it's now been paid and is history. Lesson learnt!

Hi diamondgirl78, Sarah was referring to procedural errors on the PCN which it is unlikely you'd know about. It takes someone like Neil B to recognise these errors which of course requires it to be scanned & uploaded.

Next time you know what to do ;)

Is the Council the landlord? even if they are not it may be worth writing in to them citing the restraint on your amenity of the parking, and looking for compensation for the rent paid for the facility that you are being prevented from enjoying due to the road works.
