  • I think you have become victim to npowers method of allocating their higher tier 1 units.
They charge 4572 at the higher rate per year but allocate the majority of those during the winter months.
The new online tariffs now have a standing charge so allocating tier 1/ tier 2 units is not a problem.
You should pay less at high rate during summer months.

Where is the cynicism? You have been with the company for nine months so the payments will have evened out. In fact, since you still have winter months to come, this seasonal weighting has worked out in your favour - if you switched today you will have paid for fewer Tier 1 units than if you were on a flat-structured two tier tariff.

    I don't understand your complaint.

I live alone, in a 1 bed flat with Gas central heating and a gas hob. My bill is £77.89 for ONE MONTH! A month during which I was only in my house for 2 and a half weeks...

That seems very high for someone who is being careful! Have you had your boiler serviced? Is the hot water on time that you haven't programmed properly? Is this bill from a meter reading not an estimate? I don't have gas, but my entire electric bill (2 people, 2 bed flat) is £30 a month at the moment. We are careful, but electric is more expensive than gas.

  • I'm in exactly the same situation! I just got my bill and it's £75 per month! I live in a one bedroom flat (with one other person), we only have the heating on for a few hours every evening, and longer at weekends. I've been as frugal as I can possibly be - I didn't even switch my heating on in my bedroom until mid-November! I just don't know what else I can do to use less gas??

The bill is based on an actual reading, not an estimate, so it's accurate.

It seems to be that npower's two-tier rate is the problem here. Yes, the proportion of your gas that's being charged at the higher rate decreases over the summer months, but since you use less in the summer anyway, I don't see how that's beneficial.

Would we be better off with a different supplier?

Of course it's beneficial, to npower that is:rotfl: .
As I mentioned in an earlier post the new npower on line tariffs, SoL14 and Webonline 14, do not use this two tier method, instead they have reverted to the old standing charge, albeit quite a high one I believe. So you could try to change to one of them if it would benefit you.

What time of year you switch your heating on is irrelevant. Put your heating on when it is freezing outside, and in rooms that you use regularly. If you are only in your bedroom to sleep you don't need to heat it - just buy a decent duvet and a heated underblanket. These are as cheap to run as a lightbulb.

In your main living area again only put the heating on when it's really cold out. Wear an extra layer round the house - I wear two fleeces as they are light enough to be comfortable in. You won't then need the ambient temperature as high - 18C is fine if you dress for winter (lower is just cold!). A flat has in-built 'insulation' from the neighbours so this will help keep the heat in.

I am sorry, I can not see the reasonableness of these complaints. Please explain why month-by-month weighting is unfair? If anything, it is fairer than a flat two-tier weighting as it means more customers will pay a fairer share of the 'standing' charges.

I fail to see why it is particularly beneficial to nPower. Please explain?

And the bill is NOT particularly high. £77 for one month. Knock off the £8.75 extra you pay each month for the annual [STRIKE]direct debit[/STRIKE]loyalty discount. That's £68.25 for two and a half weeks or £118.56 for a 30.4 day month. £118 for one of the coldest months for years? That's (almost) what many people pay on average evened out over the year.
