Which router for linux(Acer netbook)?

Got the Acer 1 aspire today. Have only ever used wired desktop before & that is connected (upstairs) to TalkTalk AdSlmodem .

?Is phone extension lead same as Ethernet:confused:

? Can I keep my desktop connected to ADSL(upstairs) & plug the Acer into the Ethernet socket using ordinary phone extension lead( Ethernet cable I have is very short)

?Would I be better off just getting a router,if so which one?My desktop runs XP &Acer is Linux. Can I leave my desktop alone(wired)and still have the Acer wireless at same time?
Argos&Tescos nearby. Thanks guys

  • A phone extension lead is not the same as ethernet. Completely different socket, only 4 cores whereas CAT5 has 8, no good for the speeds of ethernet.

A router makes life a lot easier. The Acer should work with any wifi router. Yes you can leave the desktop wired and use the Acer wirelessly at the same time.

Netgear DG834G or GT is a good solid wireless ADSL Modem Router and is quite cheap and easy to set up.
