Help finding basic life insurance(assurance?).

I'd like to take out some form of basic policy that will pay out in the event of my death.
Ideally I'd like the death benefit to be around £25000.
I don't have much spare income to pay this so I need a low cost option that would provide cover for the next 15 to 20 years.
I am type 2 diabetic (diet controlled) and in mid forties non smoker.
I'd like something basic but 'reliable'. I am slightly concerned that the diabetes allows them a get out if I died of certain conditions somehow claiming it was a pre-existing condition.
Can anyone recommend what type of product I should look at.
Also I seem to recall hearing of 'friendly societies' or similar that you paid a small monthly fee to join and gave a range of benefits including life cover. Do these still exist and if so are they cost effective/worthwhile?
