Credit card transactions with no ID Validation

Just got back from a Holiday in the US, while on Holiday I was using my nationwide Credit card, and was worried about the number of transactions that were being put through without any signiture or being asked for ID, just given the receipt and the card back. Now I can see how the US got into such mess.

Anyway, is there any Visa rule that says ID Validation must be carried out on each transaction, and what is to stop me disputing the transaction and getting the money back on the transactions.

No, in the US credit cards can be accepted by the retailer without any signature or ID verification. The US do not use pin numbers.
There is usually a floor limit of $25 or $50 imposed by the merchant for these type of transactions. It's rare for the limits to be higher as the retailer has to take responsibility for fraudulent transactions and has no comeback on the merchant. These type of transcations will usually only take place in fast food outlets, but having a name like yours I thought you'd know that !
