Can anybody help please. I haven't got a specigfic problem, but wondered if all these things should be in the task manager or would getting rid of some speed the computer up.
AAAArgh can't attach the "print screen" picture I've got in word. (Please tell me how and I'll edit the post!!!!!!!!!!).

I don't know what they are or how they got there!!
Do I need to remove programs, or just stop things starting up automatically? (How?)
Lots of things seem to be repeated as well.

To show a picture you first need to host it somewhere on the internet.
copy the screen print into paint (or similar programme) and save as .bmp or .jpg
www.photobucket.com will let you put pictures there for free.
Once you have done this, you can get the link for the picture (which will be directly below the picture you upload) and copy it into your original post.
If you get stuck email me the picture and I will help you <<email address removed>>0 -
I've now got a link to it (thanks to the techies who helped).
Hope the writing is not too small.

I'm going to answer the original question about the processes on the Task Manager list. I would recommend that any processes you don't know what they are you do a search on google for the exact process name and it may come back with what it is, whether you need it. Also have a look at http://www.processlibrary.com where you can type in a process name and it usually tells you what the process is for/called. Be careful with what it says about yuo do/don't need this, because something they deem you may not need may be necessary for the working of your computer or an attached device (e.g. printer)
The windows services that have to stay to run windows are mainly listed as running as "NETWORK SERVICE" or local service but some appear with different users running it.0 -

What sort of system are you running?
I've just checked mine, and I've got 8 tasks running, including 4 security programs plus Firefox for this site.
Windows systems DO NOT need loads of processes running to work properly. The more you have on the go at once. The more your system will be using your computers resources.
We see lots of posts on the techie board about computers going slow. Although spyware/viruses can cause this, in a lot of cases it can also be the fact that most people load programs on their computer with the default settings. So many of these set themselves to load at startup completely unnecessarily. Over time, the amount of programs running at startup mounts up, and with all of them running in the background all the time, they start to impede on the computers performance.
Although running through the task list site will identify what doesn't need to be running. I would say that once the computer is restarted, it will load all the programs again. I think a sort through the startup list (msconfig) would be a good move as well. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
