Can't log in to secure sites after installing Linksys wireless router

Can anyone help? My brother has NTL broadband and at Xmas bought a Linksys wireless router so that his daughter could use her new laptop wirelessly over the same network. Unfortunately, when it was all connected up, he could acceess the internet OK but is unable to access any secure websites i.e. he can't log in to say his ebay account.
Any ideas?
Sorry, I don't know what model router he has but I think its a problem with the setup. Could it be the inbuilt firewall?

It could be blocking outgoing ports: 443 for https.
Can he revert back to the previous setup and confirm he can access secure sites?
Best to get the model number and someone could guide you through the checks required to confirm if it is the cause of the problem.0
