AA membership

Good morning.
This isn't an insurance question as such but the problem has risen due to my renewing my car insurance and managing to get free breakdown cover. Consequently I am trying to cancel my AA membership.
I have been with them a few years and they write to me at the end of the year and if I don't respond they just take the money and on we go. I know, I know... laziness on my part just thought it was easier etc. Anyway, I now have breakdown cover twice over as AA say they are happy to cancel it but not refund me anything.
I had assumed that it was similar to an insurance policy where I may have to lose something but ALL of it seems a bit harsh. Here is what they sent:
We are sorry to hear you no longer require AA Membership but I would like to thank you for your past support.
As per your request, your membership will be closed from the expiry date on --/07/09. Please retain your card until this date as your cover is still active.
Fees are accepted in advance and for a continuous twelve month period. As such, they are non-refundable.
However, if you do not need AA cover temporarily and may rejoin in the future, you may wish to suspend your membership for a defined period instead. Your membership will then resume from the date you request reactivation, and run for the remainder of your membership period. If you would like to go ahead with this, please let me know how long you would like to suspend your membership for.
Another alternative would be to transfer the remainder of your AA cover to another person.
I haven't used them for years either....... they've made a tidy packet out of me that's for sure.
Should I just let it go?
Or should I make some noise?

It says you can defer it temporarily, why not do this and then go back to them when your new car's runs out
or
Could you defer your new car's breakdown cover until the AA one runs out.
Maybe worth askingmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
You have no basis for making a "noise".
Why not accept their offer to suspend your policy? You can then use the unused portion of your year (ie from now till July) towards another policy with them when your "free" breakdown cover expires.0 -
A few years back we got RAC cover when buying our car, but already had AA cover. We suspended it as the AA suggested, then once the RAC cover ran out we simply called the AA and carried on with the membership we had already started previously.
In fact, when it came to it they made an error and instead just giving us the remaining months of the original policy, they gave us a new full year.0 -
Ahhh shucks.
I just thought maybe if they weren't providing blah de blah.
Thanks for your replies. I'll defer I suppose.
Sooner have the cash though.
Thanks again.0 -
Sorry to be late in on this thread, but I used to work at the AA on this area. What people have said is right you can defer, but when your "Free" cover comes to the end the AA normally make you a discounted offer to join. As you have a new car you are a very good risk to them so I would make sure when your deferred cover comes back on, you argue for a discount.Midds - Martin's a god :money:0
