On this occassion, i believe The Hali is right to withdraw their O/D as it fully states so on their T&C. They do not like customers who are perpetually over drawn

That indicates that your credit rating is not seen as satisfactory, I would seek help on the " Loans " section on here.

Back in september halifax halved our overdraft too, other half is self employed so money doesn't always go in every month, but then a large sum would every couple of months, they said the reason for reducing it because money wasn't paid in monthly. They tried to push a loan, but i spoke to one of the girls that i'm quite friendly with who managed to get me an extra 1k for one month only by calling someone. i then started taking money out and paying it back in, also paid my avon money in there and paid avon online, i used to just pay avon the cash at the post office. A couple of months later the original overdraft was showing as being available online.

Halifax did the same to our friends who pay his wages in every week, they had to take a loan out.

I understood that overdrafts are repayable on demand, but the amounts you are talking about is stupid to think a family can find that kinda money from somewhere. They must be doing this to loads of their customers, i'm surprised they wouldn't offer you a loan. Try and get the money paid in else where.

We also had a natwest account with a 3k overdraft, we never used the account and would just pay off £50 a month, this went on for ages and natwest never once hassled us. Have recently paid it off but might have to dip in again. Can you not open an account else where and get an overdraft to help out?

Open an account with another bank - minus any kind of silly overdraft.
Sort out an arrangement to pay with the Halifax and pay off the remainder of the balance over time. Look at your outgoings on a monthly basis and do a cash flow forecast to see when and how much you are likely to be overdrawn then you can make an informed decision on exactly how much of an overdraft you require.
So say for example you dip in to an overdraft 15 days before you get paid then work out exactly how much you can get by on during that time and voila! You have a sensible figure to work from.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Right d-day has come and passed and we still cant raise the funds, not from family or friends etc....

Halifax's offer to us is to pay £1000 for 10 months to pay it off, but we can't afford that and they've basically said tough. Ombudsman are involved now but could take 16weeks to sort which by then I wouldn't be surprised if we are homeless. Halifax are so un-sympathetic and just don't seem to give a damn about what positions they are putting people in. I know its our fault and yes they can ask for the money back at any time. But it looks like bankruptcy is the only next option which im reluctant to do as we've got a 2yr old and I can't lose our house!!!!!!!!!!

I really don't know what to do!
  • Alowry,
if you pop over to the DFW board and put up a SOA I am sure the guys and gals over there will be able to help you with some budgeting and you can then approach Halifax with a repayment schedule that you can afford.
BTW I would open a basic account elsewhere so that your wages etc are paid in to that account so that you at least can pay your bills.
