Just received quarterly bill from Southern Elec

 Have been with Southern Electricity forever, and just had mild heart failure to have a bill around £200 more than the last quarter. They have taken away discounted energy units and billed on standard units (12.59 per unit. How likely is it that they may reinstate the discounted rate?? Any suggestions on how to lower my rate, I will save 5 per cent by using direct debit. Appreciate any advice!:D

    Lower rate:
    - consider switching (your rate sounds OK though)
    - pay by DD, as you suggest
    Lower bill:
    - Use less
    - check it's based on actual readings, not estimated

definately check the readings.......! if your reading is lower than on the bill...... phone it in and tehy will send aout a revised bill..

do you have both gas and electric from them?
if so do you owe on both bills. if not transfer credit from one to the other
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • I had a smiliar issue with my southern elec bill last week. My price fix 2008 tariff finished at the end of november 2008, yet they charged my last quarter Oct to Jan at the new rate!
I called up and they charged the whole bill at the pricefix tariff saving me over £70 :)
I would just give them a call as they are very helpful

We had the same thing happen to us with EDF, I opened the bill and our direct debit had quadrupled - I nearly dropped the bill in horror. Anyway after passing it to DH to phone them up the lady reinstated everything that should have been on the bill i.e. direct debit plan, discounted units etc.. Apparently the computer that issues the bill can't work out all these bits and bobs customers have..!! Luckily we managed to get the bill down to £60.00 a month from £170.00 a month, thankfully the monthly payment was only an increase of £12.00 after that work out.

Give them a ring and explain everything to them and I am sure they will reinstate everything and issue a new bill with the correct amount.

  • Op - you didin't mention on your original post that you were/are on a fixed rate? But you did mention 'discounted units'?
