Agree with the others on here.

This is just the first in a large amount of inflation the policy of lowering interest rates = crashing the pound has caused.

Expect most "stuff" to go up.

    Deflation my !!!!.

A lot of the household goods sold by Aldi and Lidl are actually manufactured in Germany, so the prices in sterling are bound to be higher than they were last year.
  • Just sat down to my sad middle aged ritual of spending an entire evening browsing the new Argos catalogue from cover to cover and noticed things I bought in December have gone up almost 50% - for instance a set of weights I bought for my son have gone up from £16.99 to £24.99, and the veg steamer I bought mainly because mum wouldn't stop going on at me to get one is now £14.69 up from £9.99. Does it not seem a little crazy to have big mark ups when shoppers are holding tightly on to their cash and hoping for discounted bargains?

Argos actually seem to be doing quite well at the moment.

This news item from today would suggest otherwise.

    Distribution centre jobs threat
Up to 200 workers could lose their jobs at an Argos distribution centre in Bedfordshire.
The centre at Kempston, near Bedford, which is operated by DHL, currently employs 570 staff.
DHL said the exact number of people affected will be determined in the 30-day consultation process which is now under way.
One driver said of the situation: "We have been told that as many as 200 of us could be made redundant." A DHL spokesman said: "DHL is committed to a full and open consultation process with its employees and their elected representatives. "As this process has only just started, we are not able to comment on the outcome of the consultation at this time."

I bought a new telly in the New Year.
I recall Argos was selling for £548 reduced from £800.
I notice it is back up to £782, however the sale did have in small print it was only valid till 13th / 14th January.

It's quite possible that the sale is over and reverted to pre-sale prices

John Lewis doing a good line in tv's,free delivery + 5 yr warranty, bought a 50" samsung plasma for £699 last november.
They also price match against other retailers.

The same might be true for Argos (they are tight on cash) e.gif So instead of lowering prices when times are tight they are trying to squeeze some cash out of diehard customers.
Just more incentive to shop around before purchasing!
  • There was a thread yesterday about Aldi, who will have a log maul (that's a big chopper to us mortals) for sale - and somebody remarked it had only been £7.99 last year. They then provided a link to the page from last year and it was cheaper. New price is £10.49 I think.

I can answer the Lidl and Aldi price rises, they're German chains so chances are they buy their special offer goods in Euros.

Last year it cost about €11, chances are this year it still costs €11, trouble is €11 works out at £10.40 now.

I can't help but wonder if deflation may have been a red herring as we import so much the weak £ is bound to have an impact on inflation.

What an oddly priced economy we've had over the last few years - houses have been just unaffordable and yet we have been swamped with more cheap goods (radios, food blenders, gaming consoles etc) than you could ever hope to buy.

Perhaps this is when prices become a bit more sensible - housing becomes more affordable and all this other stuff we don't really need becomes a bit more expensive so people think twice about buying it.
