We're in a recession and Argos have put their prices up?!!

Just sat down to my sad middle aged ritual of spending an entire evening browsing the new Argos catalogue from cover to cover and noticed things I bought in December have gone up almost 50% - for instance a set of weights I bought for my son have gone up from £16.99 to £24.99, and the veg steamer I bought mainly because mum wouldn't stop going on at me to get one is now £14.69 up from £9.99. Does it not seem a little crazy to have big mark ups when shoppers are holding tightly on to their cash and hoping for discounted bargains?

In fairness, why not? It's not like you can now buy that stuff from Woolies who I guess would have been a big competitor.
Maybe they are in dire need of some cashflow?0 -
Interestingly i popped out of work today at 4.20 and just managed to sneak in to argos before it closed to buy a phone, it was chocca.0

Argos did suffer in december from the woolies closing down sales, but in fairness to argos the catalogues may have been printed at the same time.
No doubt these inflated prices will be reduced in the coming weeks, after all the new one has to last a few months, but they seem to print a "offers" brochure every week0 -
There was a thread yesterday about Aldi, who will have a log maul (that's a big chopper to us mortals) for sale - and somebody remarked it had only been £7.99 last year. They then provided a link to the page from last year and it was cheaper. New price is £10.49 I think.0

remember the £ is now worth 25% less than a few months ago (thanks Gordon) so anything made overseas will cost more0

In reference to the printing of the book... this is done up to 6 months in advance, probably long before the announement that Woolies was in trouble. As woodbine said, prices are reduced every week and there's always some sort of sale on.0

It's just typical Argos Price inflating.
Just watch as those weights will be half price durring a special keep fit weekend promo0 -

Have to say that's the same situation as this http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20090122.p.Thermostatic_Shower_Mixer.ar2
I purchased two of these last year for £17.99 now £29.99. Have too say though that they are brill for the money even at the higher price. Going back to Argos they were doing the Braun Oral B triumph smart glide tooth brush for half price £68.99 leading up to Christmas for one week it was even £55 but had no stock, now back up to full price. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4429694/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CHealth+and+personal+care%7C10199659/c_2/2%7Ccat_10199659%7CElectric+toothbrushes%7C10199732.htm0 -
Argos actually seem to be doing quite well at the moment.
Our local store is consistently busy. I guess there's not a huge amount of competition for them now Wollies has gone.0 -
Argos always have the highest price they can charge printed in the catalogue so they can then "slash prices" when the reality is, the items in question are merely put down to the price they had always wanted to sell it at. Personally I don't shop at Argos, they are always more expensive than other stores, especially after a quick google and often, their premium products are cheaper at John Lewis.0
