bass plc

GOOD EVENING

I was wondering if any one could help

My late mother had 175 ordinary shares in what was Bass Plc

Ive found out that bass was either sold to ,changed name or split into something and keep coming up with the interconternetal hotels group & mitchells & butlers but what happen to the shares.

I doubt they were worth much but she wasn't paid out in any way so were they transferred to the new company or would have something else happened to them.

Is the share certificate now of no value if not how do i find out or does anyone know what they are worth.

Any help will be appreciated

If that were the case would one bass share be the same as one interconternetal hotels group share.

OK, this is quite a long story. Bass changed its name to Six Continents in 2000.

Six Continents (6C) was then split into two companies in 2003. These are called InterContinental Hotels Group PLC (IHG) and Mitchells and Butlers PLC (M&B).

These 2 companies still exist today.

So, your mother should have received a 6C share certificate at which time she should have destroyed the Bass certificate. Later she should have received an IHG and M&B certificates (separately) when she should have destroyed the 6C certificate.

You should contact the Registrars for IHG and M&B and explain the position. They should confirm a holding in IHG and M&B which you (or her Executor) can then sell (or hold). You will probably incur a fee if you are unable to trace the IHG and M&B certificates.

    More details here:

    http://www.ihgplc.com/index.asp?pageid=326

Both IHG and M&B have the same Registrar called Equiniti:

    http://www.ihgplc.com/index.asp?pageid=240#Equiniti

    http://www.mitchellsandbutlers.com/index.asp?pageid=423#2

I can't remember how the shares split but I don't think it is as simple as 1 for 1. The Registrars will confirm.

    Good luck!

    Andrew.

Thank You everyone . My mum was very poorly over the last 10 years and moved from her previous home in 97 where the share correspondence would have been sent to .

She did say their were some shares that maybe worth a few hundred but as we didn't find any thing after she died we thought no more of it . It wasn't until October last year ,a year after she died after sorting through some old boxes we came across the share certificate for the 175 shares in BASE PLC

We were then unsure if it were worth the trouble and cost if all they were worth were a few hundred so figured i would try here to see what you all thought.

Thank You for all your answers, i'll get back to you if we check it out further.
  • Hi

Just seen this thread after a bit of research for myself - Bass shareholders received 50 share each of Intercontinental and Mitchells & Butlers for every 59 shares of Six Continents. The company also distributed about £700 million back to shareholders.

If your mother held 175 Bass shares they would have probably been turned into 100 share of IHG and MAB with the rest being paid out as cash.
Worth about IHG £1158.00 plus MAB £301.00

Hope this helps, if you read it!!
  • :(Hi there my mother died in 1999 and her 259 ordinary Bass shares were transfered to my name on the 26th april 2001.
I have sent off a copy of the original share certificate i recieved with a letter to Equiniti to try to cash in these shares.

    The reply i got was:
Bass plc changed its name to Six continents in July 2001.

All Bass share certificates ceased to be valid after close of business on 27th July 2001 and new certificates in six continents plc, on a 1 to 1 basis, were issued.

Our records show that your six continents plc holding of 259 shares was closed on 20 February 2002.

I dont quite understand what has happened here as never recieved a share certificate from six continents and also dont understand what the "closed" means.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks in advance
    Mr G Mcintosh

I used to work for Bass and was a shareholder - altho' the memory is fading fast,Feb. 2002 was the date of the first dividend payment under the new company name (6 Continents PLC) and I THINK that they sent a letter offering small shareholders the chance to sell all or some of their shareholding cheaply at that time. Lloyds TSB were the Registrars at that point in time, and remained the Registrars thru to mid 2007.
Are you sure that you didn't take up the offer?? The shares were ~ £7 each then so you would have received ~ £1750.
About a year later 6C was split into InterContinental Hotels and Mitchells and Butler, this involved new share certs.& all sorts of special dividends as the shares weren't issued 1 for 1.Unfortunately I have destroyed most of the paperwork from that time so I can't give you any more information.
