Foreign exchange purchases are subject to a 2.95% fee...

    And from your T&C's...

That'll indeed be a cash advance. Otherwise onlinfx would have to pay a percentage of the transaction as a handling fee, which would be impossible on the tiny margins made in currency sales. I would have thought it would make it clear when the card details were being entered.

It was never mentioned on the site when I was purchasing, if it had I would have used my debit card. Im guessing theres no chance of Egg returning the money even if I complain? If it was made clear I wouldnt mind, but its the fact that I was never told

Best bet now is pay the balance off in full to stop the interest accruing.
Need to take into account the current balance (not statement balance), transactions yet to be posted, and then overpay to create a small +ve balance.

Don't use the card again until you've had a zero (or small positive) balance statement.

Well they are within their rights to charge you but there is no harm in giving them a call and explaining that it was an honest mistake. They may be lenient so Good Luck.

    See post #12.
  • Thanks to everyone for their advice, really appreciate it. Ive overpaid the balance from my Egg savings so will wait for that to clear before I use it again. Ill definetly give them a ring, £25 is enough money for me to give it a try - however, Im guessing that if I threaten to cancel the card if they dont refund it Ill miss out on my cashback Ive gained?

You made the mistake, not Egg. Deal with it! Why should they pay up?

The onlinefx final payment confirmation page has the following message...
NOTE: Payments made using a credit card will be treated as a cash advance by your card provider, and they will charge you a 1.5% cash advance fee.

We recommend payment by Switch / Solo. We understand Delta and some Visa backed debit card providers also charge a cash advance fee for currency purchases. This is not an Online FX charge and we regret we cannot accept responsibility for any such charges.

When paying with Switch / Solo, please note we require the long number in the middle of the card, not the small number at the bottom.

Egg card users, please note there is often a £500 maximum transaction value per day imposed. Egg regard currency purchases as a cash advance.

We regret we are not able to accept Visa Electron, as they do not accept online purchases.

    * Please quote reference number only if you are responding to a brochure or promotion
Always read the small print. ;)

I wouldn't go in heavy and threaten to close the card, I don't think this will produce the required results.

At the end of the day Egg have not actually done anything wrong here. I would phone up and be apologetic and say that it was a geniune mistake and you just didn't know that the currency purchase would be treated as a Cash Advance. Often for "first offences" they are lenient and a sympathetic CSA may well refund the charges for you.

Well I never saw that! Should have been a bit more thorough with the reading!
