Cancel and rejoin your gym membership

What's it about?
Some gyms currently have seriously hot new members deals, up to half price.
Are you out of contract?
If you’re a current member OUT of your contract period, check whether the new deal is less than you pay. If so, ask it to cut your fees, and, if it refuses, moot cancelling the membership.
Then Rejoin it!
If it doesn't work, consider cancelling & rejoining, though check your gym’s terms first; it may prohibit you getting the new price

Thanks. I'm a member at the village paying £100 a month for a couples membership. I will try and give them a call this week acting out the 'new customer' role. I expect they will want to see me in person first before giving prices though0
-
I would tell them that you are calling to get an idea of prices before arranging a visit to see if there is any point, worked for me with virgin/roko/david lloyd in nottingham (I didnt want to have to look around all of them if they were too expensive)
Its also worth seeing if they offer discounts for your occupation/employer. I work for NHS and some offer discount for us, I know they offer other groups/employers discounts too so worth checking0 -
VAT rate has changed and david lloyd have'nt changed their membership direct debit fees! Effectively that means they have put up the price of Gym membership!! Although they are trying to pass it off by offering the 2.5% saving plus another 2.5% off any food you buy or personal training sessions, and 1 free pass per member which you can use to get someone else to the gym, but this is to their benefit as it could be another potential member!! RIP OFF I say :mad:0

Is that not illegal? Aren't companies obliged to pass on the VAT cut?0

A company can change prices whenever they like (just as a supermarket does daily), however I suspect that in the case where you agree a price in a contract it is different. I guess it depends whether you are contracted to pay a total price per month that includes VAT, or whether you signed up to pay a price + VAT.
Is it not the case that whether you pay price inc. VAT or plus VAT, since the VAT is 2.5% less than previously and is a tax, the total amount should be reduced accordingly?0 -
I have been a member of a large chain gym for a couple of years paying £50 per month, no longer on contract. A simple call to a membership advisor in which I told her I was thinking of leaving as could no longer afford to pay £50 per month and she immediately reduced the monthly cost to £36 per month if I rejoined for a year. A couple of colleagues have had previous experiences so I would say it is definately worth calling their bluff on this one!0

Not really that viable for me as I'm with Esporta and they have a whopping 3 months notice you have to give them!
Although I am well outside the minimum term of the contract, I would still have to give them 3 months notice and any offers can't be guarenteed to be around by the time thats running out0 -
I used to be amember at Esporta (V Expensive, and rubbish Health Club IMHO)
Left last year, but they still keep writing to me about rejoining
If you still like the club it might be worth renegotiating your deal as there are now 3,6 and 12 month deals, and the 3 month cancellation policy may have also changed0 -
I pay £55 a year for gym, swimming, tennis and badminton courts!! :rotfl:0
