You don't have to eat badly on a budget, but sacrifices have to be made. Ready prepared food is a no no.
No great sacrifice then ;) This just confirms my view that to eat well and cheaply you need to stick to ingredients rather than 'food products'. Some of those ingredients are more expensive than others. Meat has always been the food which represents wealth in all cultures. It shouldn't be cheap but if you supplement a little meat with cheap sources of protein like beans and lentils you can enjoy better meat at a lower cost.

Thanks Penny btw, I knew it would be something obvious.

    Aghghgh!

This kind of article really hacks me off.

Value ranges / cheap food is NOT the same as crap food. This guy is simply spouting marketing drivel.

    That depends abaxas

You buy value chicken nuggets, or value fish fingers......they are crap food. Value porridge oats? Not so much.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

  • Tesco value chicken nuggets are made from

Chicken (27%), Water, Breadcrumbs, Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, Textured Wheat Protein (contains Preservative: Sodium Metabisulphite), Chicken Fat, Pea Starch, Wheat Protein, Pea Fibre, Salt.
Breadcrumbs contains: Wheat Flour, Salt, Vegetable Oil.

    And that's not crap?

Tesco value porridge oats however are made from

    Choose your value products wisely.

Blimey, and my HM chocolate mousse contains: Green & Black organic chocolate, butter, freerange eggs, brandy and icing sugar.

I also suspect it takes less time to make than it took me to read this ingredients list and google what half of it was :rotfl:
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • At least when you make/bake something yourself, you know what's in it. It doesn't have to work out any more expensive than buying 'value' products. I'm very new to baking and have made my own hobnobs (thanks Twink!), flapjack, cereal bars, cakes... I do use the basic 'value' ingredients, value flour, value oats, value butter but as previous posters have said, "oats is oats!"...
