Credit card purchase via Google Checkout

I am looking to purchase a new PC. I want to pay by credit card so that I get the legal protection if it all goes wrong! As usual the company will add a couple of percent to the purchase price if I use a CC. However they also offer the option of paying by CC via Google Checkout which will not incur a fee.

Having read the Google Checkout terms & conditions it appears that they use your credit card to "purchase e-money" which is paid to the company supplying the goods.

So, my question is - would this type of transaction still be covered by section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act?

Looks like (as suspected) the protection will not apply.

You might be able to arrange to pay a deposit on the credit card and the rest by another method (like the google checkout option for a debit card). You'd still be protected for the whole amount under section 75 (assuming the total cost is over £100 - you don't even have to pay that much on the card).

(Hopefully someone else will disagree if my understanding is incorrect?)

This only works if the company are flexible and only change a percentage on CC transactions rather than a fixed fee.

Be aware that your credit card might consider google checkout e-money to be cash and treat it as a cash advance. I've encountered this on PayPal transactions before.
