what is max distance for a broadband wire?

Options
hi

ive just ordered a new dell 3100 and am thinking of getting broadband as well, however my question is how far away can i place my new pc from the main phone point and still get broadband?

At the moment i have a dial up connection and the wire goes about 40feet from the phone point to the pc, but works fine. I did try broadband a couple of years ago on a free trial, but could only seem to get it to work on my laptop which had to be almost plugged directly into the phone point ... a litle inconvenient in the middle of the hall!

Also, In light of the above query, is there any company that would let me have a trial of broadband to see if i can get it to work?

many thanks

The signal range should easily accomodate somethig the size of a normal house, the broadband signal should be fine wherever you can easily run a decent quality telephone line to .

    Hi,

You might find the following information about cable types and lengths useful:

I agree you should be OK though.

A wireless solution might also be feasible if the cable didn't do the job, although there would be additional costs and it would take a bit more work to set up.

It can be done but you need a good quality extension cable (like garrydh's link). You can get one at Maplin or somewhere, but you might want to think about getting a wireless router and adaptor so you don't need more cables running round the house.
  • My extension cable goes all the way round my front room then through a wall then all the way round a bedroom then through another wall and into my kitchen, on the way of its magical jounrney a phone is attached to it so a double adaptor comes into play, I'm on cheapo E7 broadband and it still works well. 1a_y_grin.gif

The distance can make a big difference. Believe it or not putting an extension of more than 2 metres on my line means I can't get a 2mbit line as it makes the overall distnace too far.

The problem will not be how far you are away from the master socket, but how far you are away from the exchange. The more miles the poorer the service.

Contact BT to find how they have progressed with broadband in your area, since you last tried, or even better get Cable if you can. Usually faster and no filters or bits added to your phone line.

I have seen 15m telphone extensions in the pound shops, like Poundland, there were even some in our local's half price sale at 50p.

    thanks for these,

can somebody just explain how i set up these wires and modem..

before, i plugged the modem into the phone point then ran a short wire to the laptop. Is the long cable better from pc to modem, or from modem to phone point?

    thanks
