Cheque Fraud, now bank won't pay

My Dad noticed last night that someone has been withdrawing money form his bank account through his cheque book (five cheques with a total of £2000) He phoned up Barclays bank today to say that someone has stolen some of his cheques and has used them, he noticed that they were removed from the back of the cheque book so that he wouldn't notice. The bank have put a stop to the cheque book but have said that he has lost his money and will not get it back!
My parents are very upset, £2000 is an awful lot of money for them.
Can the bank do this? Does anyone know his rights?

What total and utter rubbish. Get your parents to speak to their fraud department on Monday(you didn't speak to their fraud department last night). NO ONE can say that without investigating the incident first. Ask for a copy of ALL cheques and for a written response from the bank.

thanks, i think i will go with him to the bank tomorrow to see what is going on. He thinks he knows who doen this. He is a self employed builder and he is working on a house at the moment where there are five guys who sit around all day playing the play station, he thinks they have may of stolen the cheques and copied the signature from the estimate he sent them. We don't have any proof about this though.
Legally does the bank have any repsonsibilty to pay the money back?

If it's fraud, then its fruad. The bank will have to accuse your father of fraud if they refuse to pay back the amount taken.
