Gold hit an all-time high of over $800/oz in the 70s; adjusted for inflation, the current price is nowhere near that. You don't have to buy ingots; there are plenty of bullion coins to choose from. They can be kept in a safe, in a safe deposit box or at the dealers' for a fee.
Members of the BBA will protect you for up to £33k (100% on first £2k - 95% on rest).

Not if there's a total meltdown ( as posited in the OP's question ).

Just as everyone is piling into gold.. its probably the time to pile out of it ;)

To protect yourself against inflation buy index linked goverment stock

To protect yourself against deflation, buy fixed coupon government stock.

Personaly I hold a load of Index linked goverment stock that is up over 20% in 2 years ! Now THAT IS performance from an ultra safe investment :D

You could also say - just as everyone is piling into index-linked government stock is probably the time to pile out of it! But the question was *specifically* asking
So when it happens and debtors cannot meet payments on a massive scale, banks and companies go bust like balloons at a kiddies party! What can you do to protect your savings?

In this situation government bonds are worthless IMHO. Governments can and do default.

Yeh, maybe if there was an ice age and we were under 3 kilometres of ice then maybe.... :p
