Speeding - New Driver

OH (yes OH, not me!) was flashed doing about 37 in a 30 zone on the way to the airport on Monday and is awaiting something through the post.

He's had his licence just under 2 years and recalls someone telling him that you get double the points as a new driver - 6 for speeding instead of 3 - is there any truth in this? Or did they mean that new drivers can only go up to 6 points instead of 12 before losing their licence?

Thanks

  • You get normal amount of points, but if you get 6 points within the first 2 years of passing your test you get automatically banned and have to re-sit test.

he might be lucky and be offered the speed awareness course which doesnt give you the points but at 37 he might not
but if not it will be 3 points and 60 fine,
new drivers can only get 6 points in the first 2 years before being reverted back to provisional status

sounds like you're going to be lucky. If it's nearly two years you should be able to keep your licence. I'm glad i past my test years ago.

You don't get banned if you receive 6 points on your licence in the first two years. Your licence is revoked.

OP - if your son does receive something in the post, before you do anything with it, come back here with some more information. And keep the envelope.

    Thanks for the replies.

He obviously got mixed up with the 6 points thing.

Nothing has arrived yet but I'm sure it will.

Of course its different, a ban is for a set length of time and then you get the licence back. Revoked you lose the licence and have to retake the test could even be the day after the licence is revoked.
