Years of No Claims Discount wrong

Hi, Im just looking for a bit of advice. We have just bought a new car today. Our insurance policy on our old car expires this Tuesday. We wanted to get our new car insured straight away as we need to drive it before Tuesday so firstly I rang the existing insurer and they would not cover our new car so they would not amend our policy to our new car.

So next I did a quote on moneysupermarket. After looking at my renewal note, it details 7 years NCD. However I think I have calculated incorrectly a few years ago and it is not as many years as this. This worries my greatly!! One of the cheapest insurers which came up was Diamond, so I rang them and asked about NCD and how my previous policy still has 3 days to run and would this qualify or not. They recommended we leave the old policy to expire and get our quote for the no. of NCD years including this last year. She said this was ok as we have 14 days to send in confirmation of NCD and we will have this by then.

After re-doing the quote on moneysupermarket, another insurer was cheaper, so we have taken out insurance starting today detailing what I believe is the correct number of years NCD including this last year.

What I am not sure of is whether I have done the right thing!! The options were to a/ go with the full years NCD discount as of today (so I wouldnt panic if I had a prang), or b/ go with the years NCD including the last year which I dont strictly have yet, or c/ the final option, I wondered whether the insurance company ever look into this any further or if they only go on what the previous insurer confirms. Although as I write that last option I cant imagine it is right as surely that would be open to fraud.

At the end of the day I dont want to have to worry but am just a little concerned about what the telephone operator advised and if I am leaving myself open then I would rather change the insurance to the lowest no. of years NCD just to be on the safe side!!

Hope that makes some sense. Thanks in advance for any advice!! :o

From my personal experience an insurer will accept what your renewal notice states.

When we first became a 2 car household our insurer at the time matched hubbys full NCB on the second car. When renewal came round the following year we assumed that car 2 would then have just 1 yrs NCB but the renewal stated 5+ yrs. I called them to query it and they said it was right, they had left it as 5+ yrs NCB.

When I called around for quotes I explained to the first few companies about the NCB. They all said that they would accept whatever the renewal letter stated.
When we decided on the co to go with I double checked with them again about the NCB and they accepted what the renewal stated.

  • Thank you for your reply Shelly. What I have done now after reading your post is emailed them asking them to a/ confirm that it was ok for me to include the year that hasnt quite finished yet and b/ would they accept what it says on my renewal note, and in the event of a claim, would they require proof of the 7 years. Hopefully they will reply in writing so I will have this if there is ever any query.
