Once he has the operation he may be able to claim DLA. If your income is low you may be able to get housing benefit/council tax benefit.

If he is awarded DLA at middle rate care and you look after your husband for 35 hours per week you will be able to claim carers allowance.

Personally, i would apply for DLA now. Ask the CAB for help in filling in the form, it is very comprehensive and extremely daunting to a new claimant.
Good luck for your OH and his operation and keep posting, even if its only for moral support.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

This puzzled me. Presumably he's having the operation to improve his situation, if not actually cure him; even at the moment the OP's mentioned nothing that would be likely to make him eligible for DLA. I would think he's be eligible for IB at the moment and after the operation his situation would be reassessed.

I agree that if they're on a low income at present it would be worth investigating LHA and CTB.

I am of course assuming that his operation may take several weeks/months o before he became fully functional again. He cannot stand for long, and the op helps him out of the bath i think are applicable for DLA.

Having just completed an application form for AA, I think that you need far greater problems to be able to claim DLA, although it would be worth trying if you can stand the stress.

Of course it will be up to the DM whether the OP's husband is eligble for DLA it was a suggestion that the OP can either take on board or completely ignore, i certainly would not discourage the OP from filling in a form.

Neither would I but these forms are very stressful and depressing; probably only worth doing if you have a good chance of success.
