I also found this which says that canary x bullfinch whilst being very colourful are also quite hard to produce so I think it is more likely to be siskin and my OH who was very into cage birds also seems to think it is the siskin.

Color Canary: as in the Color Bred or Red Factor canaries. The Red Factor can be found in all shades from very light oranges, coppers, deep red-oranges, to almost red. The Red Factor is a strain achieved from interbreeding the canary with the Red-Hooded Siskin, Carduelis cucullata. Today, in the wild, the Red-Hooded Siskin is very rare and is endangered.
