Camping/fixed Caravan holiday for non driver?

I would possibly like a few cheap days or so away in the country either a campsite or fixed caravan but and I'm on my own and I don't drive -
a lot of places seem to be for drivers/those with a car. I need somewhere pleasant I can get to by public transport not a site off a motorway etc or difficult to reach without a car.
Money is tight (isn't it always) but to be honest I've not had a holiday away for about 20 years. I live in London.

Any suggestions welcome?

  • have a look at www.ukcampsite.co.uk has a map so you can see where the sites are.

We travelled to minehead (Butlins)and Weymouth ( Haven)by public transport before we had a car.

Butlins was by train and then there was a bus link I think you can book the train and bus costs through butlins.

Haven was by train and then taxi. The site isnt too far from the town and we used the bus in the week if we headed into town because it is still a fair old walk but doable.

Also both these site are listed on the sun holiday list for the 9.50 holidays

    Good luck

Thanks. I'll have a look at the link, but have a vision of any Butlins camps being more family orientated with "entertainment" laid on" which is not really my thing. Ideally I guess i'd like a picturesque area I could go explore and draw and take pics of the scenery that sort of thing.
I know there are specific painting holidays but they tend to be a bit expensive and more than I can afford.

what about a b + b in a country market town? I am biased as i live in the Peak District but we have lots of single people come up and stay in caravans, holiday cottages, and b and b's for the walking, scenery, and slow pace of life...

so what about looking at a train map and seeing where you could get to easily in north wales, the lake district, the peak district or where ever you fancy painting and then looking up cheap b and b's or caravans in that small town / village?

Or look at where national express coaches travel to, for example I am travelling to Nottingham from manchester and getting the coach back for £1 each. If you would consider going abroad for a few days ryanair flights are cheap and you might see a little sunshine! (we booked very cheap flights to salou and a hotel for 3 nights total was £260 for 3 people H/B) There is a very nice campsite in salou, which gets really good reviews and is only 5 minutes from the town centre (sanguli I think its called?).

I would suggest looking for a cheap flight with ryanair. I think you will find that most campsites are in the country and out of the way if you have no transport and those with lots of facilities will be catering to families.

There are sometimes cheap mid week deals at bed and breakfast places sold on ebay or maybe cottage rentals?

How about looking at a house swap? Then you would only need a flight ticket or a national express ticket

  • HAve you conidered Shell Island in North Wales? I know its a bit a train journey but its gorgeous just to get away form it. You would probably need to buy a tent but two man ones are cheap and the train station isnt too far away if i remember.
