Boiler Upgrade : Potential Savings?

We currently have a Potterton Puma 100e Combi - must be 10-15 years old. I would like to replace it, but the cost of doing so is likely to be £500-£700 depending upon the new boiler we choose.

Our annual usage is just over 14000kWh - do you think the change from the old Potterton to a new HE Condensing boiler is likely to see this cut down somewhat? Most of our gas usage is from heating and hot water, we do have gas fire and gas hob too but given the massive difference between winter and summer bills, I'd say it's safe to assume that most of the cash goes on gas burnt by the boiler.

Good afternoon: You'll need to put a "1" or possibly a "2" in front of the figures you have quoted for a supply and fit (depending on where you are in the UK/specification of installation)

If your Puma is operating safely , be truly money saving, keep it and have it serviced annually.

The SEDBUK data base does not list your boiler(as described) but a Combi of 10-15year vintage is likely to have an efficiency of 70% to 75%.

You might get an efficiency of 90% from a new boiler, although many people doubt than in normal operation they achieve that figure.

So assuming you CH and HW use 12000kWh your potential savings are 1,800 to 2,400kWh pa so £60 to £80 a year at best.

I would be very surprised if you could get a new boiler fitted and meet all the new standards, drain etc for anything like the £500 -£700 you quote - most people seem to have figures of double that, and more if you have a system flush(which some say is mandatory for the warranty to be valid)

The other point is that modern boilers stuffed full of electronics do not have the reliability of older, simpler boilers.

I have a 21 year old boiler(65% efficient) and use far more gas than you, and I have no intent of replacing - and that is the view of many on MSE.

There are several threads on this - but this quote from another post I made is relevant.
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors stated recently :

The average cost of installing one of these modern boilers is £1,720, but saves on average just £95 off people's gas bills." See:

Good evening: It is there;) Potterton Myson Puma 100e... SAP seasonal efficiency 78.8% (Band D)...as I said, no need to replace at this time. Parts should be available until at least 2011 as this boiler was last manufactured in 2001 (most boiler manufacturer as members of the HHIC have agreed to make parts available for 10 years after production ends: in practice this could be much longer). Manual available here

    Canucklehead,

Thanks - your link hasn't come out on your post, but the efficiency is even better than the 70%-75% I estimated - so the OP's savings will be around £50

I am obviously doing something wrong in searching the sedbuk database as I have just tried again and can't find it.

I select gas boilers and potterton myson and get 'no matches' for anything.

Any Idea what I am doing wrong?

    P.S.
I can find it bt scrolling through all combi boilers. - perhaps the search facility isn't working

Small differences in the calculated SAP seasonal efficiency values are not significant and should not be relied on when comparing boilers.

Enter Puma in the model name box on the search page ignoring the other boxes. All the grey boxes in the section I've pasted are working links. The 2 links on my previous post are working at this end.

    Thanks,
I get exactly the same if I enter 'puma' but if I select potterton myson from the drop down list I get nothing.
