Our Tesco finally had some in today so I bought two packets.I had thought that the shortages were just around here-near Manchester- but I couldn't get any in Oxford last week either.
  • Interestingly enough - many people don't know that suet is actually the fat which is found round the kidneys of many farm animals.

It's stripped off the kidneys, shredded and processed and put into the packet for us to make delightful dumplings and suet pastry.

    :)

We have dumplings as a special treat every now & then and they are totally YUMMY:j Haven't noticed a shortage of Atora around here, can get ordinary and veggie varieties OK.

Years ago families had dumplings all the time, to fill up hungry mouths cheaply. My Dad lived to 85 and everyone he knew ate dumplings all through the winter. Didn't seem to do them any harm.;)

They were a large, poor family but they did get one hot meal a day but they never had enough plates to go round so they often had to wait until someone else had finished. He said that sometimes they had their dumplings as a pudding with a bit of treacle or syrup over it, but they had to lick their plates and use them as pudding bowls because they had none of those either.
