How do you transfer camcorder videos to disk

Can anyone help with this problem please? We have transferred some camcorder recordings to the laptop and would like to put them onto a disk. We have tried using recordable DVDs as advised by an assistant in Boots but without success. As these are recordings of our holidays we would like to save them somewhere a bit more permanent than a computer hard drive. We have asked assistants in several shops but no one really seems to know. At the moment the recordings are also saved to memory card as well as the laptop hard drive.
Do we need to try recordable CDs or do we need special software?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you

What operating system are you using and what is the format of the downloaded videos?
Something like this would do.

Thanks for your reply. We are on Windows XP and the videos are played back using Windows Media Player. So it does seem we have to buy software to transfer to disk. Thought it wouldn't be as easy as transferring digital photos to CD.I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)0

This is only true if OP is running Vista, under XP you have to use a third party DVD burner, My DVD for example. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
