One of the problems I have often come across, is when people have bought a new computer, which comes bundled with Norton pre-installed, but don't know enough about computers - and hence fail to configure it properly (or even at all).

At some point they pick up a virus, and their computer starts behaving strangely, but they don't suspect a virus because they know they've got anti virus software installed - they can see the icon on the desktop.

At this point, I'm usually asked to help, and quickly realise that their version of Norton has
    1) never been run
    2) never been updated with virus information
    3) has now expired - so have to re-subscribe
    4) they've tried to re-subscribe, paid their money, and it still won't work (because virus already on their computer disables it).

This above situation perhaps colours people's views of Norton, which I agree is a bit unfair.

Most problems I have personally encountered are due to the failure of keeping the anti virus package updated, rather than poor performance of the software package in question. Think that its important to stress the need for regular updates, and regular hard disk scans.

My Norton antivirus subscription is about to run out.

To extend it for another year will cost £21.99, plus 21% VAT because their European operations are based in the Republic of Ireland.

If I tell it I am in the US, the cost for the same product extension is $29.99 (£16.79) plus local tax.

Now presumably it won't let me use the US price because when I enter a UK address for my card it will reject the transaction, but I would ask why there is a 25% price difference between the two countries for an identical product, with no delivery cost.

you could try using a proxy US server and buying it that way -
