You're right, at £3.50 per document it is expensive for data that should be in the public domain free of charge. Maybe there's a way of accessing it using the Freedom of Information Act without incurring costs - any advice out there?

I have just spent some dosh downloading 6 pages of original records and the associated transcript page, out of these 6 there are transcript errors that I am aware of on 4 of them and possibly more that I am not aware of. On one page my grandmother was not listed but her sister was listed twice, even though the details were all there correctly on the original record.

I have reported these back through the website, but would have expected a better product for the money charged. It seems we are expected to do their proof reading for them

    Hope you have more luck!

Why should you get this information for nothing? The information was transcribed and catalogued by people who presumably had to be paid for their time.

The information is in the public domain and free of charge so long as you are willing to visit the relevant archives. If you are not then it seems to me that £3.50 isn't a high price to pay for the undoubted convenience of being able to access this information online.

It's only 10 credits a page (£1+) if you're happy with a copy transcript, the £3+ (30 credits) is to view the original transcript.

I've had a lot of fun for the minimum 60 credits!!

i sometimes do a lot of indexing for a few sites for free, as for why should we pay well it's our ancesters we shouldn't have to pay to find out what they did or where they lived.

    Thanks for this OP :)

My great grandma should have been on the 1901 census but isn't, so I've been waiting for this one to get the rest of her household details and search them in 1901 instead - already found some interesting bits (and a couple of dodgy typos/transcript errors) now I've found her in 1911, so I'm off to 1901 now - this could get addictive :D
