Our ancestors' census records are probably much more truthful than more recent ones (the one's I complete, for instance) because I don't think I would have recorded that my husband was next door.
I don't know why, but I haven't been able to access Genes Reunited for some weeks - every time I try, it crashes the computer (I've tried 3 different computers). A bit annoying considering I've paid them for 6 months worth of credits.

genes reunited is a pathetic waste of money this was a problem on genes reunited a while ago, i was a member for 3 years, but because there are a group on there that all know the customer service (by the way this is 3 independent people) lol, thaey all get away with saying what they like to who they like, i am talking about the topics forums, people get banned for no reason, a very good friend of mine was banned a few years ago, has she had her own opinion, a lot of people sent emails but of course the ban stood has her argument was with a very good friend of the customer helpline we all phoned itv but no one wanted to know its disgraceful to pay for this then they ban you for talking about general things i wouldn't go back on there if it was free much prefer rootschat or the other free sites:))

Really must get back into my family tree! Will let the traffic die down a bit though! Is there an equivalent in Eire? I'm finding the Irish half of me VERY difficult to track down! LOL

i sometimes do a lot of indexing for a few sites for free, as for why should we pay well it's our ancesters we shouldn't have to pay to find out what they did or where they lived.

With all due respect, who should pay?

History matters of course, and as a member of both the National Trust and English Heritage myself I strongly agree that preserving and making this information generally available is an important thing to do.

But, with all due respect, I think it is unreasonable particularly in the current climate, to expect the taxpayer to fund amateur genealogists to sit in the comfort of their living rooms following their hobby.

As someone said above, that data has been compiled at great expense. It's not unreasonable for people who are deriving personal value from it to pay a modest fee to access it.

Millions of people up and down the country think football matters immensely, but no-one expects the public purse to stump up to enable us to follow our passions!

so what your saying is it's only amateur genealogists who sit in the comfort of their home following this so called hobby?

i think you will find that there are a significant number of professional geneaologists who do this from the comfort of their homes too.
  • I've stopped using Genes Reunited as I've got a bit paranoid about a certain individual who has claimed every single person on my tree as being related to herself. Find this a bit freaky as she can't be related to all of my husbands relatives going back generations and all of mine!

Although I've stopped her from viewing my tree, was tempted to put a false entry in, under the name Michael Mouse, to see if she was related to them as well!

I've got free access to sites and help at the LDS Family history centres.
You don't need to be Mormon to use the facilities or attend services-although you'll likely be invited to.

You may find that Census information is free at your local library using the Ancestry.com website.
