Credit Cards in Ireland

in Credit cards
Hi, I don't know if you guys can help me as you're a UK site, but I'm from the UK and love all the advice here so I thought it might be worth a shot
I've recently moved to the Republic of Ireland and, in case you don't already know, the only debit card they have here is something called a Laser card, which isn't accepted online a whole lot. I want to apply for a credit card so I can buy things online but I'm not sure whether I'd be accepted for one, as they may have no credit history for me in this country. Also, I'm worried that if I do apply for one and I'm rejected, it could affect my (currently reasonable) credit rating in the UK.
So, I was wondering if anyone knew whether it would be wise to apply for one and, if so, whether they knew any to recommend? I'm not fussed if it's a high interest rate or anything as I'll pay it off in full each month, I just want it for the convenience. Sorry if this isn't something you can help me with or if I shouldn't be posting here (first post, be gentle :P) Thanks in advance

You say your credit is OK in the UK - does this mean you still have a bank account here? If so, can you get a UK debit card and use it in Ireland? I mean, I can use my debit card in bank machines and shops when I go on holiday to the continent, so I don't see why you couldn't use it in Ireland.0

A UK debit card is fine to use to withdraw money (apart from the worry of hidden charges) but it's not accepted online.
If my credit rating's totally different here, I guess it can't hurt to apply for one. Thanks for the advice
