Initially you will have to use the company that is supplying the house.

Be very sure that you read the meters the moment you have the keys.

You can 'guess' the number of kWhs for your type of property.

Let us know the details of the property and your type of use - e.g. 1 bed modern flat or 8 bed unmodernised mansion, single working person or couple with 6 teenage children!!! - and we will give you a figure to enter into the comparison sites.
  • Thanks for the help!

Its a 3 bed, new build, town house and we are a working couple. I have had some estimates on what the gas will cost but they seem very unrealistic!
Having a better idea of the cost will help us budget how much we can send on everything in the first month. :o

most of the comparison sites have a estimator and you cant really do better than that. Nobody can say exactly how much you will use until its been monitored for a while.
  • I'm in the same boat as the original poster. Working couple, first time buyers of a 2 bed house. How would I find out who supplies electricity/gas to the property? The completion date is next friday, would the estate agents know?

    The Estate Agents should know.

You will normally get a letter addressed to 'The Occupier' from the Utility company.

Make sure you also CHECK the meter readings asap - do not rely on the previous owners/estate agents.

Remember that as soon as you start using gas/electricity you have entered a 'deemed contract' with the company supplying the property.

Also note that the deemed contract is at standard rate, i.e an expensive tariff. So change either the tariff or supplier ASAP.
