wireless router for virgin media cable broadband

thinking about getting a wireless enabled laptop in the near future.
I am told I need a wireless router to replace the broadband modem.
Virgin have quoted me £47 for one of these.
Any ideas if it is worth shopping around or what the best make is?
I am on their quickest broadband speed at the moment if that makes any difference.
Thanks.

yes its worth it if you shop around, the router wont replace the modem (it can do but you wuld have to get 1 that was a modem and a router), just get a router for use with cable and connect an ethernet cable from the modem to your router and hey presto you have wireless, theres another stage to it as well though. Im with virgin and i have this router but im sure you could find it cheaper than that or maybe find another make cheaper

Before they offered their own brand Virgin recommended Netgear or Belkin. We have a Belkin which does the job.

I bought a netgear WGR614 from ebay a couple of years ago. Never let me down yet. It was reconditioned for about £30. Worth having a look.

in my opinion linksys is the best of the lost plus they have a 24/7 free phone support which is excellent and the set up is easy.

    I use a linksys, with Virgin .
  • shop around you can get a nice Linksys, Netgear or asus router for alot cheaper than buying off of virgin.

I got my Linksys WRT54G refurb'd off of evilbay a few years ago for £25 ish, but there are plenty of nice routers for about 20-30 on evilbay, or if you want a reputable dealer ebuyer or misco :)

If you fancy upgrading your broadband to a faster speed too, ask virgin about their routers, they will give you one for £6-7 if you are upgrading at the same time, a lot of CSA's don't offer this but will give it when you ask.

Likewise a couple of years ago... Excellent and EASY to use, set-up and plug and play away with...Have two pc's, laptop, Wii, Xbox, Tv & BR player as well as a network running on it and NO PROBLEMS.... (kiss of death - :D )Very impressed and would buy a Linksys again...

I know they did have problems three years ago with some of these modls, but I am sure these problems have been ironed out now...
