Taking a meter reading

Hi,

I have a dial electric meter. I have had to read it a few times recently as my letting agent gave me the wrong initial reading when I first moved in!

I read the meter last week and it appeared to read 11804. I read it today and it appears to read 11941. This is obviously wrong!! So, I guessed that I must be reading the meter incorrectly. After looking around online today I have found quite a few good websites but they all tell me to read the meter in a different way.

For example one site tells me to subtract one from a number shown on a dial if the previous dial is over a number. Then another one tells me that dials next to each other move in different directions. Then another tells me to read from left to right. Then another tells me to read from right to left. I am so so so confused by all of this!!

Would someone please explain to me exactly how to read a dial electric meter. Please tell me EVERYTHING that I need to know!! Imagine you are explaining it to an alien who has just arrived on the planet with the task of reading my electric meter.

Massive thank you's to anyone who can offer me the help I so desperately need....
