In a new flat I am moving into there are wooden boards on the floor in some of the rooms (bedrooms / lounge) making up the floor. Are these okay to lay carpets straight on to or do I need to lay something else on them first / replace them?
If you take a look at http://mynewflat.wordpress.com you will be able to see what I mean.
Thanks in advance!

Lay underlay first. Even cheaper carpets with own underlay feel much better with seperate underlay. If upper floor flat will also reduce noise for people in lower floor. No need to put lining paper first (newspaper etc) if you dont use rubber/foam backed carpet, if you do then use lining paper or carpet may stick to boards if you need to lift.0

If you do do not use underlay you might well find that the pattern of the boards shows in the carpet. Especially if the boards are uneven. I have had this when we laid some cheap foam backed carpet once. Apart from the extra comfort, the underlay will hide a multitude of small imperfections in the floor.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
