Blu Ray quality of older film?

Having just bought a PS3, partly so I have a Blu Ray movie player for my HD tv & partly for games I was considering replacing some of my favourite DVDs with blue ray.
I bought Batman The Dark Knight on Blu ray and the picture quality is outstanding, though I can’t expect this from old movies.
As some of these will obviously be before the rise of HD, Blu Ray I was wondering what others experiences of Blu ray ‘old’ movies are?

Hi,
I have found mixed results with older films on Blu-ray. Some are stunning and some i dont know why they bothered. I think it could be down to the different companies ie Sony,Fox,MGM etc not putting the effort in and believing people will buy them just because they now own a blu ray player.
I have stuck with normal dvd's and used the upscaling for my classic films.0 -
To be honest I notice it on the "older" films indeed thatthe quality if not there (to be expected), Dambusters, Battle of Britain, Zulu, etc as I am into war films, however the upscalin og teh Sony 350 blu-ray player I have on more modern films with standard dvd's is exceptional indeed...
As to the blu-ray, blown away!! Try Zulu in blu ray if you like the film, Final Fantasy "Spirits Within" and the CGI was good on standard dvd, but truely awesome on the blu ray... Cars, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins are also very good....
Also, if you like war films... "Band of Brothers" is truely stunning!
However, noted on some blu-ray films, it stands out that some "sets" on films are very poor indeed and can be easily shown-up with blu ray!
As I said, running a 350 Sony blu-ray player along with the 4500 40" tv via HDMI of course... I like films and it was my xmas pressie to myself, but the results are/have been staggering!:j

Great!
I bought Band of Brothers also yesterday! have not checked the quality yet though.
I have a Samsung DVD upscaler, granted it only cost £50 but it seems to give everything a blue/green tinge and is generally abit crap.
It triggered the move to go full Blu Ray & fully utilise the 1080p HD tv i bought 9 months ago . Am glad i did!0 -
Yes, What I have tended to do is buy my blu-rays via CEX or somewhere like around teh £8-£10 mark and then sell then if I do not like them on Ebay which I tend to get my money back or less 50p or so... Some films are quite expensive, so look around like CEX online or on Ebay... A couple of have bought like Wanted or Son of Rambow were "ok", but not ones I wanted to keep, so re-sold them on to pay for others...
Band of Brothers is one worth getting though and watching. I am half way through it myself... "Zulu" has some very good write-ups which I have planned to watch tonight, where as "Battle of Britain" another of my favourites has poor write-up's which is a shame....
Very worthwhile reading about the blu ray films on Amazon and such like before buying to see if it is worth paying the little extra...0 -
i read that old films 'could' make the transition onto hi-def well given the nature of the old film used
thik a lot of factors affect this though
seemingly a lot of 80's stuff will never make true hi-def as they were using tape0 -
