i dont get why you dont have the bills inyour name. If the debt was joint then you are both liable for the repayment not just yourself, surely your ex should be paying his fair share not just lumping it all onto you with a prepayment meter.

I didn't initially live at the property when we bought it in 2006, I stayed at my council house while work was done, so gas and electric here were in his name only, have had an ongoing battle with them for 2 years.
I am apparently liable for the debt as we jointly own the property although he hasn't lived here for over 2 years ( we split within 2-3 weeks of me moving in and we no longer speak). I did supply them with his address at 1 one point as he had meters there which proved he didnt live here. They still refuse to put the bills in my name although they have now reduced the debt he run up before I moved in. They also have proof of my previous address as I had meters there and they know when I moved out which again proves I wasn't here when the bill was run up. They say they will not transfer it to my name until the remaining debt is cleared.0
