    If you apply for credit ipso facto you expect the creditor to make a check. Just because you chose not to read the small print does not make it illegal.

    What would be criminal is the corporate irresponsibility of offering six to eight hundred pounds credit to someone without making any checks.

    Surely as the credit check needs the history of where someone has been living for 3 years the companies may not have this info without speaking to the customers anyway.
