In my Own Opinion there is only one thing to do with Norton
and that is removing it altogether and getting AVG or Avast.
But I suppose you paid for it.....
So Try disabling your firewall for a mo and see if that helps.0 -
another happy norton customer. Is it just anti virus software or is it norton internet security?
The anti virus software shouldnt stop any site access - i suspect the firewall is and that it is norton internet security.
If so, you need to go into the firewall settings in norton and tweak the settings.
Is it paid for or os it a trial version. If the latter the uninstall option would be the sensible option and then I can make some much better recommendations.0 -
It is Norton internet security, and yep it was paid for. Must have dropped the ball on that one. Will recommend to my OH to try to tweak the firewall settings and see if that helps. Thanks for the advice.0

good advice in the second post to turn the firewall off to test the access and then you can turn it back on and try to adjust the settings.0

can someone please put me out of my misery.
i have bought a new comp. descent spec ( amd 34000 processor 64 bit, 200 gb hdd, 2gb ram etc).

now its time for the anti-virus software. i havent a clue. if i get for instance free avg how do i get a firewall. and then theres spyware, ad popperstopper spybot....
my head is spinning. sorry for my ignorance but can someone put in plain english what excatly do i need... is there just one thing that does the lot... what order do i install it after loading my os.

Hi daveingram_uk,
First of all get the Windows XP firewall turned on before connecting to the internet.
Start/Control Panel/Windows Firewall
Next goto Windows Update & make sure all the latest patches are installed:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Then Anti Virus. There are lots out there but many people like AVG free:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
AntiSpyware. Again lots of choice but for ease of use try Microsoft Antispyware or Adaware SE

Or

After you are all sorted with that little lot you may want to change your browser to a more secure one.

Or
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
Just remember to get the firewall turned on first before you connect to the internet & start downloading0 -

he forgot about replacing the windows firewall with either
kerio (says you pay for it but after the trial it still works, just some additional features disabled)
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm
or sygate

Don't want to confuse more but you should also have ....
Spybot .... http://www.safer-networking.org/
(with its TeaTimer option turned on)
SpywareBlaster .... http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Spywareguard .... http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
IESpypad (if using internet explorer at any stage) .... http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm
These will all work fine together. Nothing should conflict with anything else.0
