Refusal to pay credit card charge

Hello everyone. I deperately need help. I payed off my full credit card statement of £400 about 3 months ago from my Barclaycard Platinum. I recently moved to France and i'll be here for another 4 months. My Dad has just emailed me saying that he has received a letter from Barclaycard for me saying that I owe them £35 for card protection plan, Which I actually took out last year and paid ( I've had the card for a year), which is obviously a renewal. In no way did I want to renew it and nobody asked me to. My dad read the other statement out to me saying that I had not made the payment in time.

A barclaycard bill has arrived.
Balance from last statement £35.00
Late payment charge £12.00
Interest on your standard balance £1.00

New Balance £48.00

Then overleaf I get a note saying "Account is in arrears
We have not received payment requested on your previous statement. Please pay £5.00 immediately followed by £5.00 to reach us by 6th February."

So, after paying off my whole balance and being a good credit card user I get shafted, when i'm not even in the country! There is no way i'm paying for this. Have I got a leg to stand on?

Please reply quick as i'm about to phone up and give them hell.

Thanks.

It''s likely that the 'card protection plan' was set up under a 'continuous authority' - a bit like a direct debit but with a credit card. Unless you're absolutely 100% sure that you didn't (perhaps inadvertently) sign up for this when you first requested the plan then I wouldn't go in with all guns blazing.
  • Thanks for the reply. I'll go in and politely ask to have the charges reversed.
