Where to get cooker extractor 'chimney' cut down?

I want to have a canopy extractor fan over my range cooker in my refitted kitchen. Unfortunately the ceiling height is only about 2130 and with the worktop/hob at 900 and wanting the hood high enough not to bump my head all the time this restricts the height of the extractor to less than the minimum height of any I can find.

I have been told that the actual fan part of the units is not that tall and therefore in theory the metal 'shroud' could be cut shorter to reduce the overall height. I imagine that trying to do this DIY would likely produce a poor finish, even if a smooth and striaght cut could be acheived the heat generate dmight still affect the finish. So my question is what tradesman/workshop should I go to to have this work done, putting metal workers in yell is not very promising - I was wondering if a car bodywork place might be theanswer? Anyone any thoughts?

i cut mine with a regulay hacksaw and the finish was not diminished at all, and the finished edge was very good.
even better was the fact that i could position my cut edge at the bottom and it was hidden behind the glass canopy.

have you got your hood? can you see if the cut edge will be hidden? it will make the job more doable.

you must, though, suitably support it when cutting, a second pair of hands will be necessary.

    hope this helps.

Have you got the hood? the ones I have seen are in 2 parts that slide agaist each other so that it works wth different height ceilings.

Problem is I need to go shorter than the shortest part...

Try and find an engineering workshop near you that specialises in sheet metal work. They will cut it down in a matter of minutes.

You can cut it with a hacksaw and metal cutting blade yourself and if you make a jagged cut you can straighten the edge with a flap disc in a small angle grinder.
