Solid electric cooker rings are RUSTY

4 year old electric cooker rings are solid style (Beko cost about £150); they are pitted and rusty. is it possible to replace the rings? The rest of the cooker is in good condition.
When does the ring become unsafe to use; as the metal just seems to flake off?

sell Beko hob elements.
I don't know when they become unsafe, but would have thought they must have some builtin failsafe mechanism?Debbie0 -

Pehaps we could also have comments from folk with other brands if their rings stay nice and fresh, for comparison sake.0 -

Thanks for the link
If I replace all 4 its going to cost at least £80, plus fitting as I wouldnt want to do it myself incase I get it wrong; shall we say £50 fitting by electrician ? = £130
Then if they are in the same state in 4 years time, is it worth it?0 -
In my experience all solid metal hobs are rubbish. No, make that absolute rubbish!
In fact a few years ago, in my previous house, I deliberately sought-out a secondhand Creda that had spiral elements. For whatever reason, these never seem to rust and, whatever people some people say about them making the cooker top harder to keep clean, I never found that a problem. Indeed, the Creda's lifting lid made that a very easy job.
My guess is that manufacturers went back to the solid type becase gullible consumers liked the 'continental look' and they were cheaper to produce.
They do say that regular use of fine grade wire wool with a little vegetable oil will keep the soild type in good condition. Maybe I was never regular enough with it?
Either way, I really doubt this is a problem specific to Beko - I've had exactly the same happen with several other brands.0 -
beko will not make the rings themselves, they just buy them in. therefore other makers will use the same rings. in my experience they are all pretty much the same quality.
as you have found out yet again, its often cheaper to renew the item rather than repair it. consumer goods are so cheap these days. and parts/labour so expensive.Get some gorm.0 -
There must be some way to blacken the plates. I was watching the tv programme about the "Victorian Farm" the other day and they were using a product to blacken the range. Unfortunately I do not know what it was called. Kitchen maids used to do this all the time as part of their job. Someone out there must know.
Have a look here, it might help.http://www.hobbyfarms.com/crafts-and-collectibles/cast-iron-refurbish.aspxI can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
It's called Zebo and you can buy it from any decent hardware shop or anywhere that sells woodburning stoves.
Hope that helps.0 -
