Sorting out travel insurance and have so many questions :-(

I am sorting out my travel insurance for our honeymoon and was intending just to take out an annual policy, however, I'm confused now!
We have four children and intend to take a family holiday abroad next year.
Should I buy a policy that covers my future husband and myself and then add the children later, or should I just get a family policy straight off?
Will I be covered if I then travel on my own (or anyone on the policy travels alone) throughout the year?
Will my 16 year old son be accepted on our policy?
Is there a policy which will insure me when I ice skate abroad?
Eeek I've never done this before! Help!

Hi
I used to work in insurance sales (Norwich union-check some others who are underwritten by them to compare prices as cover tends to be comparable!).
You can get an annual policy for all of you- however some companies say you need to have everyone on the policy for the full duration of the policy so you couldnt add children on mid term(unless they were born after the policy started).
Also, most insurers will allow named people over a certain age (normally 16 or 18) to travel independently.
Ice skating is normally classed as a leisure activity- but some companies class it as winter sports so watch out you dont buy one without the extra cover if you need it. That can vary from company to company.

I would recommend that you take a family policy out straight away as if you try to add them at a later date some insurers may make an admin charge.
A foot note to the cmk88's message a large percentage of travel insurers do not allow adults over 16 to travel independantly of each other and some do not even allow the spouse to travel independantly (They state the persons must be travelling with the first named policy holder so watch out for this).
What you should also take into account is travel insurers generally like the name on your passport to be the name on your travel insurance so you may find you need to issue the policy with your maiden name and then change it when you up date your passport. I woudl recommend you check with the travel insurer before you take out cover and ask whether they will make an admin charge to change the policy over when you change your passport.
I hope this helps0
