  • Yes they would because to do otherwise would be to discriminate between different EU citizens.

But surely if the EU bailed Ireland out, they would have to compensate the UK savers with money invested in Irish banks - wouldn't they??

You'd like to think so, but why should they? We're not in the Euro so why should they worry about a non-Euro currency country. At the end of the day nobody knows, but I reckon that the EU are just as sceptical about the UK as we are about the EU. For the past few years we have been a thorn in the side of the EU with our strong pound, and they would wish nothing better now that we are down, than to stick the boot in.

Has anyone actually contacted Anglo Irish Bank and tried to get their money out?

I am getting very near the point of trying to do this, but am not sure exactly what to say to them:eek: I can't exactly say that I have no confidence in the bank or Ireland as a country and so don't trust them with my money!

Well I consider it an emergency that my savings are at risk. As previously mentioned, I opened the account with them safe in the knowledge that it was backed the the UK compensation scheme. Surely the fact that this has changed should be good enough reason to be able to withdraw the funds.

Even if you could prove that your money was less safe in Anglo-Irish than it was in any UK bank, then you still have the thorny issue that part of the money was protected by the Irish scheme when you opened the account (all of it if you had less than €20,000) and the exact amount covered in £ has always fluctuated owing to exchange rates.

It seems to me rather futile to fight with Anglo over making a withdrawal outside what is permitted in their T&Cs. They are far more likely to say no.

I don't see why you should have to lie: Write to them and tell them what what has happened, they've changed the rules, changed ownership so you want your money back. Insist they do it without penalty too. Cheek.

You'd hope so, but I'm not that confident, are you?
