This is really getting my goat...

For the past couple of weeks, my computer has been disconnecting from the internet at 2 or 3 minutes past 1 am, and then I can't re-connect for about 20 minutes. Always at around the same time.

It happened now and have just reconnected and immediately my security said that "a recent attempt to access (or was it attack?) my computer has been detected". However I did not see this on previous nights. I'm on broadband.

This is driving me potty  Any ideas?

Thanks

  • What software (AV, firewall etc) are you using?
Women priests. Great. Now there's priests of both sexes I don't listen to - Bill Hicks.
  • it may be a reset at your isp end although that shouldnt happen

I have Norton. Came with the laptop and never had problems until recently.

  • I'd suggest you remove Norton. Used to have it, found that Zone Alarm Pro is better.

your ISP may be sending out something at that certain time to update something or other. Your Firewall may see this as an attack. Norton blocks IP's that attack for Half an Hour, before permitting them again. So when you try to connect to their server again, it won't let you, because Norton has blocked it!

Try and right Click on Norton Firewall when you get disconnected again later, and Disable it. Try and get on then! It ought to work. You can manually remove 'blocked' IP's from a list in Norton, but I can't remember how now (Not step by step anyway - its in the options!) because I removed it!!

Had ZA Pro, but ditched it because the Privacy controls were a pain to configure.
Found that I could not get into a vast number of websites.

Reverted to free ZA Personal and use a free anomoniser. Cheaper and works better (for me / IMHO).

I would contact your ISP as they may have a Daily database refresh
or some kind of maintenance at that time.. ya never know.

zone alarms fine once you get used to it and you can also switch all the annoying smart defence advisor warning should you so wish (but I would advise against it).

I would recommend removing Norton as previously recommended, but don't forget most ISPs perform work on their servers early in the morning so it could be their system goes down for 20 minutes. Have you checked your ISPs website as there is usually a service status/planned outages area?

Thanks everybody. Shame because Norton has never given me any problems. Not that I have to be online at that time of night, it's just that MSE gets exciting with all the banter... :D

If you've not had problems with Norton the why ditch it? There are plenty of happy Norton users around with no problems such as me. And as for Norton disconnecting you, I think that's a nonsense. I've had Norton for around 5 years and been subject to loads of attempted attacks and never been disconnected or an attempt at connecting refused.

Maybe your PC is telling you that you should be in bed at that time. :D
