Gap Insurance - Am i covered

I purchased Gap insurance through my VW dealer when i bought my car.
The car is registered in my name as is the gap insurance policy, but the car insurance policy is in my partners name and i am second driver.
Am i still covered in the event of a claim?
thanks

  • Who owns the car?
  • i own the car, in my name
  • The motor policy therefore needs to be in your name. In the event of a claim you may not be covered.

The gap policy kicks in in the event of a total loss claim as you know, but if the vehicle is declared a total loss the vehicle registration docuemnt will be requested by the motor insurer and they will have concerns with your partner insuring the vehicle in his/her name when they don't own it and are not the regsitered keeper.
  • The insurance company have been informed at the time of taking out the policy that the vehicle was owned and registered keeper was me, i.e. partner of policy holder.
Ive just renewed my policy and paid in full, it was a lot cheaper for my partner to insure and myself as 2nd driver, hence the reason i want to do it this way, but if its going to affect my gap insurance, i may consider changing it.
  • That's good that the motor policy is in order then. In this case then I think you need to check with the gap insurer whether the policy is valid in the event of the total loss cheque not being issued to you.
  • ill check it out, thanks for your help

are you the main driver? if so you are 'fronting' which may explain why it is so much cheaper for your partner to take out the main policy in their name with you as a named driver. its may render your main insurance policy invalid in the event of a claim.

i only mention it becuase you own the car and refer to the insurance as 'your' policy but you are the second driver.

My partner is the main driver on the car insurance policy and i am the named driver, i only done it this way due to me being under 30 and she being over, so it was cheaper for her to be the policy holder and me the 2nd driver. Insurance company does know that the vehicle v5 is in the 2nd drivers name.

The GAP insurance policy however is in my name due to the fact my name is also on the v5.

What slipp means is do you do most of the driving or does your partner? If you do most of the driving you should be down as main driver and not named driver.
Classing yourself as named driver (when in fact you do most of the driving) to get a cheaper quote is called fronting and if found out in the event of a claim your insurance could be invalid.
