Flash memory or HD mp3 players? Feedback please.

I am looking to get hold of an mp3 player but am unsure on a couple of issues:

i) Can you get flash memory mp3 players with more than 512mb? If so, where and how much?

ii) Do the better known HD mp3 players eg. iPod, nPod etc. skip if you use them when running/cycling etc. ?

Thanks.

  • As I'm going to get an MP3 player for daughter at xmas I've been checking hundreds of sites(well it sure seems like it)I have found the following sites useful as they also do some flash players with Igig. I don't know if the hard disk players skip but logically they may well. I think I have settled on Oregon Scientific mp130. it looks good and can be expanded with S.D.cards up to 512meg, possibly 1 gig.

From personal experience, you need to be careful with regards to getting cheap unbranded mp3 players.

Maybe I was unlucky but I got an unbranded 128Mb Flash-type MP3 player off ebay for £35. It worked pretty well for 6 months but then one day it adamantly refused to switch on any more.

This sort of gave me an excuse to splash out on a Creative Zen Xtra 30Gb hard-drive based mp3 player for quite a bit more than £35! :) That one's still working reliably, and the sound quality from it is superb.

Sometimes you do pay for what you get...! ;)

They may not skip, but almost every review of the hardware behing the ipod (the hitachi 4GB microdrive) says that activities like jogging will shag the heads that read the drive and seriously shorten its life.

Just a thought, if you can get hold of one of the original Muvo 4GB players which has had the card harvested from it, then you could repair it with a 1GB + solid state compact flash card. This does work and if your interested I can supply more details?
